Event 149: Radyr Weir (9 July 2017)

34 volunteers from Cardiff Rivers Group and Friends of Forest Farm had a very successful day on Sunday, clearing rubbish from the River Taff and tackling Himalayan balsam along the river bank.

The day started well when CRG were presented with a cheque for £2,995 by Mark from Viridor to help buy new equipment (thanks!).

A couple of volunteers were not so lucky when they disturbed a wasp’s nest and had to cool their stings in the river itself!

Together the team removed 37 bags of waste, 4 traffic cones, 3 tyres, 2 shopping trolleys, 1 tree, a road barrier (with resident eel), various toys and a lot of miscellaneous metal from the river.  We even found a new mascot…

… Radyr Rex?  Taffysaurus?

They also cleared lots of Balsam to allow native vegetation to return to the area.

Thanks to Cardiff Council Rangers, Parks Services and local PCSO’s for coming along to lend a hand and dispose of rubbish.

A great partnership effort!
