Event 172: Radyr Weir (25 August 2018)

(The rather creepy photo at the top is of a doll’s head found during this event!)

Over 40 volunteers from Cardiff Rivers Group returned to the River Taff on Saturday, 25 August, to tackle the area around Radyr weir.

The group split up into teams to tackle the riverbank, Longwood Drive, the Taff Trail, and the Melingriffith feeder.

The volunteers worked hard for 2 hours, and together they collected 109 bags of rubbish!

Much of this was found in the feeder. Volunteers kitted out in waders and wellies trudged through the muddy feeder stream to collect bags and bags of discarded drinks cans, which littered the stream floor.

Group member Louise Tambini said, “It was lovely to see so many people give up their Saturday morning to make such a huge difference to this area. Everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves!

The amount of cans we found in the feeder was shocking. I really wish people would dispose of their waste correctly and stop damaging this important habitat. I hope that a deposit return scheme comes into force soon to prevent people from irresponsibly littering their drinks containers in the environment,” she added.

All waste was collected by Cardiff Council.

Event 116 : River Taff Near Western Avenue

On Saturday (14 November) we continued our clean-up of the iconic River Taff, by Western Avenue, and surrounding areas.  Despite the rain, there was a terrific turn out of eager volunteers!

It’s an area we hadn’t visited for a while, and there was plenty to keep us busy.

We managed to collect the full set of shopping trolley, bicycle (two, in fact) and traffic cone, along with “branded” litter from the nearby fast-food places — although, to be fair, much of it was quite old, and had been thrown in fairly inaccessible places, so it seems that someone is doing fairly regular general sweeps for routine litter. The oddest find of the morning was probably a plastic sausage.

We also managed to unblock a grille over a culvert on the feeder stream that runs from Tesco under the old black-and-white gatehouse into the Taff.  The grille in the photo below was blocked almost to the top before we started work!

And we returned a large expensive trolley to Wickes, who kindly donated 15 litres of paint and a roller- set that will go to Cardiff Men In Sheds to help paint the first Shed at Dusty Forge Ely, in partnership with Action in Caeru & Ely (ACE). Partnership working in Cardiff for everyone’s benefit!

CRG Radyr Weir Clean Up

Our next event is this Sunday, 10th of October. We are back on the Taff, moving upstream this time, working around the Radyr / Forest Farm Area.

With amount of rain we have recently had we expect a lot of rubbish caught up in trees and on the banks. If the river is too high we will do a general litter pick along Taff Trail and around bridge and weir.

Volunteers are to meet in the car park at Radyr Station at 09:30 for a safety briefing.

We will issue kit there and then walk over to the Taffs Trail. Please wear suitable footwear and either waterproofs or refreshments depending on the weather ! We will provide the rest of the equipment. Let us know if you are coming so we can ensure we have enough equipment for all of you.

Don’t forget that CRG now have a facebook group where join to show your support, leave comments, add photographs, join in discussions etc. Facebook Group

thanks,
